COSMAP
Overview
COSMAP
COSMAP - COmputer Simulation of MAnufacturing Process - is the simulation software for heat treatment process, also capable of carburizing, nitriding and local heating/cooling processes. COSMAP simulates temperature distribution, progressing phase transformation, stress/strain (distortion) profiles in the manner of the coupling between each other, and chemical composition of carbon and nitrogen in the cases of carburizing and/or nitriding. This software is the analytical software which is principally based on the Metallo-Thermo-Mechanics developed by Professors T. Inoue and D.Y. Ju in the framework of finite element scheme. Everyone with elementary knowledge of metallurgy, heat transfer and mechanics can easily access COSMAP.
Note:COSMAP is a part of research results of the IMS-VHT project carried out for three years starting from 2002. The program was mainly developed by Dr. Tatsuo Inoue (Professor of Fukuyama University, Professor Emeritus of Kyoto University) and Dr. D.Y.Ju (Professor of Saitama Institute of Technology).
Note:
IMS is the abbreviation of Intelligent Manufacturing Systems, and VHT is the domestic and international Virtual Heat Treatment project supported by Manufacturing Science and Technology Center, Japan.

Framework of COSMAP system
The code COSMAP is constructed by the multiple solvers of direct method and ICCG method. It is possible to select analytical technique flexibly depending on the problems by user's requirement. Pre-post processor FEMAP or GiD is adequately employed as GUI. Interface is equipped for more easier accessibility to heat transfer coefficient identification program and the material database, MATEQ developed by Materials Database Subcommittee of Engineering Plasticity Committee, the Society of Materials Science, Japan. Users can also adopt individual program to identify the heat transfer coefficient.
Input data type and format
Input data types are as follows.- Analysys model file
*.nas ; MSC-NASTRAN format - Material property file*
*.dat ; data in the file is free format. - Control data files for process and analysys
*.pos ; the data in the file is free format.
Note: The materials database MATEQ mainly for heat treating steels is recommended to refer the mechanical properties such as Young's modulus, and stress-strain relation depending on temperature and phases, thermophysical parameters such as heat conductivity and specific heat, and metaurllurgical properties; CCT and TTT diagrams, volume dilatation due to phase transformation. This database MATEQ is now scheduled for international use, while now in domestic.
